The Five Reasons Why the Star Kids Movie Must Happen

1. African American youths today are bombarded by predominantly negative images of themselves through the music and film industry. By “negative” images, we mean images that depict African Americans in socially destructive behavior, and as living within limited stereotypes. Just to give a few examples, African Americans are often portrayed by the media as involved in criminal activity, as unintelligent, as poor, or as limited to certain careers such as basketball, or music. It’s time to present African Americans in a more expanded view and positive light.
   
   
2. These youths are culturally more attracted to film and music as mediums of learning, rather than literature. African American youths turned out in droves to see the film “Stomp the Yard” and “Akeela and the Bee”. Film is a viable medium for reaching and influencing this crowd.
   
   
3. African American kids and other under-represented ethnic groups in America often suffer from lower self-esteem and confidence because of the perpetuation of certain images by the current popular media. In order for them to reach their highest potential, they need to see people that look like them doing positive things.
   
   
4. We must bring these issues to the attention of the public! A film is a powerful way to draw attention to this problem, and begin a dialogue on the subject.
   
   
5. We will teach spiritual lessons and positive values through this film. Star Kids teaches children that each child is valuable and born with a gift and purpose no matter who they are. Children will also learn the value of truth, love, peace, and unity.
